Sunglasses Lenses Explained: Visible Light Transmission & Coating

Common Types of Functional Coatings

Different coatings serve different purposes and can be combined depending on product positioning:

1. Polarized Coating

This is one of the most essential and noticeable features in sunglasses.

  • Filters horizontal reflected light
  • Significantly reduces glare from water, snow, and road surfaces
  • Improves visual clarity and contrast

Ideal for: Fishing, water sports, skiing

2. Anti-Reflective Coating (AR Coating)

Typically applied to the inner side of the lens (can also be double-sided):

  • Reduces internal reflections
  • Prevents the “reflection of your own eyes” on the lens
  • Improves overall visual transparency

Especially suitable for: Long-time wear and premium products

3. Hard Coating (Scratch-Resistant Coating)

A fundamental but essential layer:

  • Increases surface hardness
  • Reduces scratches from daily use
  • Extends lens durability

A standard feature for high-quality lenses

4. Hydrophobic Coating

Primarily designed to reduce water adhesion on the lens surface:

  • Water droplets are less likely to stay and can quickly roll off
  • Minimizes blur caused by moisture residue
  • Maintains more stable vision in rainy or humid conditions

Ideal for: Rainy weather, outdoor activities, and humid environments (e.g., seaside)

5. Oleophobic Coating

Mainly used to reduce oil and dirt adhesion:

  • Reduces fingerprints and grease marks
  • Keeps lenses cleaner for longer
  • Can be wiped clean effortlessly

Ideal for: Daily wear and high-frequency usage scenarios

6. Mirror Coating

A reflective layer applied to the outer surface:

  • Reflects part of incoming light
  • Enhances shading performance
  • Adds a strong visual and aesthetic effect

Commonly used in: Sports and fashion sunglasses

Summary

If VLT determines how much light is blocked,
coating technology determines how well you see.

  • VLT → Defines usage scenarios
  • Coatings → Define user experience and product value

In product development, combining the right VLT with the right coating system not only enhances user experience but also helps build a clear product hierarchy and competitive advantage.

A truly high-quality pair of sunglasses is always the result of a well-balanced combination of both.
